Kathy Curry, Owner of Huntsville Massage Professionals, checks client Crystal Low.
Crystal Lowe admits after having her first child five years ago, she questioned whether to have a second. “My first pregnancy was tough; I had a lot of swelling and a lot of back pain” she said. So, when she unexpectedly found herself expecting, she was concerned. “I thought my back was never going to handle this; I thought I would be bedridden,” Lowe said.
Then Lowe met Kathy Curry, owner of Huntsville Massage Professionals. A Licensed Massage Therapist, Curry specializes in Prenatal Massage. She says that massage offers several benefits for expectant mothers. It can help ease structural changes the body experiences during pregnancy as well as reduce stress on weight bearing joints such as low back, pelvis and ankles. Curry also uses Lymphatic Drainage Massage when working with her expectant clients to alleviate edema, an accumulation of fluids in the tissues that causes swelling and pain. This technique can also help boost the immune system by facilitating the movement of fluid through the lymph nodes. Lowe sees Curry on a weekly basis and says it had made all the difference this second time around. “I’ve been able to cope with the pregnancy without the back pain. It’s unbelievable. I can tell if I miss a week; I start swelling in my hands and feet.” That’s why Lowe also wants Curry with her once she goes into labor. A former labor and delivery nurse, Curry has seen first hand how massage can help alleviate stress and reduce the need for pain medication, forceps and the request for epidurals. Getting a massage during contractions can ease the pain. Mommy is less stressed and therefore the baby is too.
